Mexico Calls on Israel to stop settlement expansion

Mexico today urged Israel to halt settlement expansion in occupied Palestinian territories in order to achieve lasting peace in the region, during a Security Council meeting of the UN.

"It is essential that Israel put an end to the establishment of new settlements in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem, and the so-called natural growth (the colonies)," said the ambassador of Mexico to the United Nations Organization (UNO) Claude Heller.

Before the Security Council, Heller said that another of the essential conditions for lasting peace in the Middle East is that Israel ends with demolitions and evictions.

also urged Israel to lift restrictions on the movement of persons and property as Palestinian security forces strengthened their control over territory. Heller

also urged to allow access for humanitarian and reconstruction aid to the Gaza Strip to prevent a humanitarian disaster, while establishing control over the smuggling of weapons.

also the representative of Mexico condemned the attacks committed recently against Israel from Lebanon.

Finally, the diplomat lamented that despite the high-level meetings between the United States, Israel and Palestinian Authority have not been able to resume negotiations towards a lasting peace in the Middle East.
